Grateful for the 5 Productive Years!

jeff_st_5yrsIt has been a little more than 5 years ago since I joined  STMicroelectronics, a European semiconductor and electronics company, after some time working with American multinational companies (Intel, Delta Design).

Well, I would say I enjoyed those first 5 years and they were productive years in my career journey. There were some challenges but more rewards to ignite a person like me to go on.  Indeed, time flies so fast if you are enjoying what you do. And I’m grateful to God for I believe He’s the reason of it all.  I’m also thankful to STMicroelectronics and all who have been part of my journey.

Working In A Tech Company

Working in a technology company as an engineer is challenging and it keeps me from getting bored. Doing routine job is the least that I like. Ever since I joined the semiconductor industry, I have been part of technology R&D doing some exciting design and development work. I find fulfillment in being able to contribute to solving mind-boggling technical problems.

There are a lot of opportunities in technology companies for people who love to think out of the box. For instance, if you have an innovative idea you can submit an invention disclosure and get some monetary reward when it’s accepted for patent filing and when the patent is issued or granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Based on my experience, there would be frustrations along the way especially when what you think is a very brilliant idea/invention later turns out to be already existing or patented. But don’t give up. Sooner or later, you will come up with something that has not yet been out there.

And in all things, may God the giver of real wisdom be glorified. I believe all career achievements would amount to nothing without God.

What to do when your A/C is not blowing cold air?

There is definitely a problem when you observe that your car’s A/C is blowing warm air instead of cold air. It’s very frustrating especially during hot summer. One reason could be insufficient refrigerant due to some leakage.

But when you encounter this problem and you hear a very constrained hissing sound from the evaporator side (passenger side), then that’s a sign of a malfunctioning expansion valve. One effect also when you have malfunctioning expansion valve is that the engine idle speed drops significantly when the compressor motor kicks in.

Would I?

Would I call you names (e.g. stupid, idiot) or shower you with all kinds of insults because you don’t agree with me or believe in what I believe?
And would I kill you because we are not of the same faith or affiliation?
No, I won’t. Doing so is what I consider bigotry.

Would I force you to do things that are against your conscience, faith and beliefs?
Would I force you to say that what I am doing is correct and morally acceptable?
No, I won’t. Doing so will make me more than a bigot – a dictator.

Some people may not be as intelligent as we think we are. Some are rich and some are poor in this world’s standard. We have different beliefs and also differ in how we live life. But God loves us all and has given us his Word (Bible) to be our guide in life.

Work-Life Effectiveness

jeff_RnD

I always desire to maintain work-life effectiveness wherever I am and whatever I do. Life is not all about work. But we work to live. And when we work, I believe we should not just work hard but work smart as well. So as much as possible I see to it that I optimize my office working time so I won’t have to render overtime work.

We work so we can provide food for our family. But let not our work be a reason for the family’s disintegration when we don’t have time anymore for those people we care for.  We have to remember that work is just one aspect of life.

One good reminder in Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Onward To Success

Life is not without struggles.  There are circumstances that test our determination to succeed. We may fail along the way, maybe several times but it doesn’t matter.  We get up, learn from our failures and go on to realize our dream. And I would say, dream big. It should be big enough to inspire us each day.

I’d like to share 3 things we need on our journey to success.

1. Don’t stop learning.
With the recent advances in information technology,  vast resources are made available to us. So learn as much as you can and acquire new skills. Do a self-study on any new available technologies or topics that interest you if there are no opportunities for formal training. That would give you a significant advantage over others even those foreign counterparts you may have in your career life.  And never forget to learn from the people around you.

2. Don’t be afraid to take risk.
Trying to do something you haven’t yet tried involves risk. And generally, we are afraid to take risk. We are so afraid to fail. But if we look at the people we consider successful, they have their share of failures.

3. Go beyond your comfort zone.
We have a tendency to stay within our comfort zone. But I would say more exciting challenges are out there. The more rewarding thing to experience is to overcome challenges and discover new things. At first, we’ll feel the stress and discomfort but the success at the end will be much sweeter.

So if you don’t stop learning, never afraid of taking risk and willing  to go beyond your comfort zone, then you would surely be amazed at the success you would achieve. And above all, honor God and trust in Him for it is HE who gives us the ability to produce wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18).
